October 19th, 2010

Pictured above are the winners of this years “Booked for Bikes” Vergennes Rotary Club / Bixby Library literacy program. Eight lucky winners were drawn from a raffle on Vergennes Day on the City Green.

The Booked for Bikes program just finished its 13th year. Program chair person Scott Gaines from Vergennes Rotary Club, helped Bixby Library Head Librarian Rachel Plant announce the winners. Children age 5 -15 read books throughout the summer months in hopes of winning a Trek Mountain Bike provided by the Vergennes Rotary Club. The literacy program was designed to help keep kids reading during the summer months. For each book read, a child gets to enter a raffle entry once a week throughout the summer. Kids from the five town area of Vergennes, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Waltham, & Addison were eligible. The success of our program is due to the promotional efforts of Rachel Plant and Gail Martin, Bixby’s Children’s Librarian. Our program helps support the same literacy goals of the Bixby Library. The “Booked for Bikes” program not only promotes summer reading, it also brings children and their parents into the Bixby. Another goal of the Vergennes Rotary Club to support their local library.

The program has added another feature to their Vergennes Day drawing by partnering with Safe Kids of Addison Co. For the past 5 years Chairperson, Chuck Welch and his incredible staff of volunteers have provided over 800 free bike helmets to our area children.

For more information regarding the “Booked for Bikes” program, contact Rachel Plant or Gail Martin at the Bixby Library in Vergennes at 877-2211. You can also visit their website at www.bixbylibrary.org. To learn more about Vergennes Rotary you can contact Scott Gaines at 877-2878 or visit their web site www.vergennesrotary.org.

1790 Ohio River Run for Polio Plus

April 15th, 2010

Forty years ago, my college friend, Stewart and I planned a canoe trip down the Mississippi River, from his boyhood home in Maysville, KY to New Orleans. Unforeseen circumstances caused us to cancel the trip. We have stayed in touch through the years. Now we are both retired and have re-kindled the adventure and want to do a trip, by canoe, from Pittsburgh to Maysville, KY, a trip of 425 miles. We will be following the same route that Stewart’s Scottish ancestors took in 1790 in by keelboat. They were headed into the wilds of the Northwest Territories. George Washington was president. There were 5 people employed by the government and the lands of Ohio and Kentucky were up for grabs.

We are planning the trip to begin in April 2010. As member of Rotary, I will be collecting sponsors and pledges for the Rotary Polio Plus program. We also plan to write a book about our adventure and document the journey with daily blogs, video and photos. People, clubs, schools and businesses can pledge so much per mile.

I would like to involve Rotary Clubs along the Ohio as well as Vermont to get involved and pledge money through their club to the Polio Plus Program. Schools could possibly incorporate the month long journey into their curriculum as well as pledging money.

Right now we are in negotiations with a possible corporate sponsorship for supplies as well as possibly matching funds for what we can raise for the Polio Program.

With a background in photography and education and Stewart’s marketing/advertising experience, I feel we are well-balanced team to provide great public relations and exposure to any organization at associates with our adventure. My goal is to raise $10,000 for the Rotary Polio Plus Program. We will see what the future holds.
